What is nutritional therapy?

What is…

Nutritional Therapy?

Nutritional therapy is the application of a wide range of tools to both promote optimal health and prevent disease states.

This is achieved by encompassing evidence-based medicine and nutrition to support each individual.

Naturopathic nutritional therapy practitioners understand that each person is an individual, therefore a ‘one size fits all’ approach does not work and instead a personalised approach to health is needed. This is where naturopathic nutritional therapists use their knowledge and skills to identify imbalances in the body in order to tailor the care and protocols for each person. This method works to get to the root cause, alleviate symptoms and promote better health and wellness. It is important to note that nutritional therapists do not claim to treat or cure disease states and health conditions.

Nutritional therapy practitioners understand that each system of the body is intertwined in health and look at each person as a whole instead of only focussing on one area of health. For example, we understand that ongoing stress may be manifesting as IBS in the digestive system or affecting the nervous system through poor sleep, and vice versa.

Who and What…

Can Nutritional Therapy Help With?

There is an ever-growing list of what nutritional therapy can help with.

It may be used to simply enhance health and wellbeing for people in good health, for those with ailments which ‘flare’ every so often or for people with ‘chronic’ conditions; the conditions with many symptoms which you may have had for a longer length of time and affect you every day.

Nutritional therapy can help to alleviate small day-to-day issues or to diminish symptoms from diagnosed conditions:

Digestive System

Bloating, diarrhoea, constipation, indigestion or diagnoses such as IBS, acid reflux and gastritis

Nervous System

Stress, poor sleep, anxiety, depression and mood imbalances

Endocrine (Hormonal) System

Mood and hormone imbalances, energy fluctuations and diagnoses such as PMS and diabetes

Immune System

Frequent virus and bacterial infection and diagnoses such as allergies and autoimmune conditions (asthma, rheumatoid arthritis and coeliac disease)

Reproductive System

Hormone imbalances, pregnancy, infertility, women’s health such as PCOS, endometriosis and men’s health such as erectile dysfunction

Cardiovascular System

Balancing blood pressure and cholesterol and diagnoses such as atherosclerosis, and metabolic syndrome

Musculoskeletal System

General aches, pains, inflammation, and diagnoses such as osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, gout and fibromyalgia

Skin & Respiratory Systems

Acne, psoriasis, dermatitis, eczema, asthma and bronchitis

Nutritional therapy can also be used for weight management, support after surgery and to enhance sports performance.

When the body is given the correct opportunities it can begin to recover from symptoms and work towards an optimal state of health.

Functional Testing

You are unique.

Nutritional therapist practitioners have been trained to see each person as unique and are able to use functional testing through reputable companies to really delve deeper.

Functional tests include gastrointestinal, hormonal, immune, parasitology and toxic and heavy metal assessments. Testing allows practitioners to identify what may be contributing to each person’s ill-health and can help to deliver an appropriate individualised protocol suitable to each person’s needs.

Working Together

As practitioners…

We understand the importance of working alongside other healthcare and medical practitioners.

We always work with your general practitioner (GP) and will refer to them if we feel this is needed, for instance if we need to request blood tests or if we have identified a ‘red flag’; a symptom that may need urgent attention. We do not use nutritional therapy as a replacement for medical care and will always be happy to discuss the nutrition and supplement protocols provided.

We may also recommend practitioners in other areas of support such as acupuncturists, chiropractors and herbalists if we feel this will support you as these are not within our scope of practice.

Please do get in touch if you feel nutritional therapy will support you or if you want to find out more about how I work.

Here's what people say about their experience

I saw Kerry in clinic last year where she greatly helped me with my gut/stomach issues after I had so many years with no joy from my GP. Her advice and guidance on nutrition was greatly received and the nutritional programme was a delight for me to follow. There was no pressure to address every suggestion but to follow what I could in small blocks. Kerry’s listening about my stomach issues was just the start and the positive advice right from the first visit made me feel at ease, this was important to me as some personal information is shared. I use Kerry’s advice every day and it’s had a massive impact on my everyday living. I’m so very grateful. T.B.
